Opportunity… as soon as I saw the word prompt I thought of Galatians 6:10. When I searched it, the amplified said it best:
So then, as occasion and opportunity open up to us, let us do good [morally] to all people [not only being useful or profitable to them, but also doing what is for their spiritual good and advantage]. Be mindful to be a blessing, especially to those of the household of faith [those who belong to God’s family with you, the believers].
The next thing that came to mind was my favorite John Wesley quote:
Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.
Opportunities seem to be everywhere. The world is in desperate need of people willing to do good. Sometimes I get overwhelmed at the need and how great it is. This verse and quote feel like burdens to carry, instead of a joyful way of living. I have to back up and look at my day… as I have opportunity, not as I see lots of needs that are not in my immediate world, or not anywhere close to my sphere of influence. There is plenty of opportunity as I go through my day to do good without paralyzing myself about all the opportunities I do not have.
To do good in my daily moments, to ask God to help me see and hear, and then act on the opportunities that are right in front of me is how I desire to live. I think about how needy the world Christ walked in, and how He met with His Father daily, and listened to him and obeyed the will of the Father, nothing more nothing less. My desire is for that to become my filter for all the opportunities that come my way every day. May I not miss the good works that God has planned for me already and not get lost looking at opportunities that are not mine. May I listen for the Father as I walk along my day.
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10
Oh how I love your thoughts on Galations 6:10. Like you, I’m often overwhelmed by the “do all you can”, but it’s because I hadn’t considered the “as I have opportunity” aspect. Thank you for sharing this — it’s a much-needed reminder in today’s world, where the needs are so many and so great. Your FMF neighbor at #43
