One of my favorite things about blogging is having an opportunity to check out books ahead and then share with my readers about them. I had the privilege of being part of the book launch team for The Promise is His Presence: Why God is Always Enough by Glenna Marshall. It has been a blessing interacting with the author and hearing her heart. She is living this out and wants to encourage others to do the same.
Sometimes a book hits your hands and heart at the right time. This book was one for me. Glenna does a beautiful job of weaving together her story of loss, ache, and struggles with the promise of God’s presence all through Scripture. She takes your hand and leads you through the pages of the Bible with a flashlight to help the reader see how God always promises to be with us and guide us through all the various struggles of life. Glenna emphasizes that the presence of God in the hard is more than enough. There are no fairy tale endings, but there is a sure foundation that will give us strength and perseverance to walk through the struggles with the hope of eternity in view.
So many quotes worth marking that I cannot wait for my hard copy of the book so I can re-read and highlight, but here are a few I appreciated as either encouragement or conviction.
Anything you think you need in order to believe that God is good- that’s your golden calf. (40)
The Word of God is like manna—it’s daily nourishment, daily reminders of God’s nearness. It’s what God knows we need in order to thrive. But, so often, we hunger for something more. (43)
When we make the mistake of equating God’s inherent goodness with what seems good to us, we limit our belief in His ability to be good. (105)
To proclaim that the Lord is our portion forever means that He is our portion in the places we are most afraid to proclaim it. He cannot be enough for us only in places we feel safe. He has to be enough where we are afraid for Him to be enough. He’s not sufficient if He’s only sufficient when it is convenient. The Lord’s sufficiency transcends fear.
I highly recommend this book. I have a feeling that many of you will be able to relate to Glenna’s struggles and appreciate the encouragement of the everlasting truth, God is always present and always enough.
