Consistent

IMG_5959Consistent… I laughed even as I read the word prompt. Hmm… something I am not. This sentiment was confirmed as I shared the word with my son, and he reaffirmed what is already known in my family, and probably my friends too. I like a lot of things, and think many things are great ideas. If you have been following my weekly Daybook posts https://inkblotlife.com/?s=daybook you will notice me starting briefly a housecleaning plan and then abandoning it, me starting a 10 day exercise plan that I did follow consistently, and then declared I was going to keep going, but that did not happen, meal plans, exercise plans, curriculums, house cleaning and organizing plans, routines started, and then left in the graveyard of my great ideas that I could not keep up with consistent care. Life skills and ideas are not under the category of consistent in my life.

Thankfully, there are things that are consistent in my life, because I know that they are my life. Being in the Word of God is a consistent habit in my life because it leads me back to the one thing that is always consistent, God. The word consistent according to Oxford dictionary is “unchanging in nature, standard, or effect over time.” Synonyms for consistent are :

steady · stable · constant · regular · even · uniform · orderly · unchanging · unvarying · unswerving · undeviating · unwavering · unfluctuating · homogeneous · true to type · dependable · reliable · unfailing · predictable

Being consistent in the Word of God reminds me of His consistent character. Hebrews 13:8 declares that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. There will never come a time when He will change His character, His essence, the things He is passionate about. I will always find Him faithful, just, merciful, loving, kind. He will always pursue us and is ready to welcome us back. He is ready to forgive and redeem. He is always consistently working for His glory and our good. He will never be inconsistent with what He states in His Word.

Although I may be inconsistent with eating habits, exercise programs, cleaning plans, and goals, I will always serve a God that has been, is, and will forever be consistent. He promises that “The grass withers, and the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever” (Isaiah 40:8). So as that old hymn declares, On Christ the Solid Rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand (Edward Mote, 1834). My one consistent is having an eternally consistent Savior, and for that I am consistently grateful.
