Worthy… throughout Scripture God is described as worthy of praise. Jesus in Revelation is described as worthy of praise and honor and glory. John the Baptist says he is not worthy to undo Jesus’ sandals, let alone baptize Him, but we see Jesus, the one who is worthy of all honor, glory, and praise lowering Himself and allowing the unworthy to become worthy. Because of Christ we become worthy.

I think of that moment at the last supper when Jesus donned a towel and carried a basin of water from disciple to disciple. The only one who was not worthy of that kind of servitude, and yet He chose to lower Himself so that He could show us His love and why He is worthy. He washed the disciples’ dirty feet. He washed the feet of Judas, the one who in moments would betray Him after three years of living intimately together. And then Peter, the one who would become the leader of this group when Jesus had returned to heaven, but not before he denied even knowing Jesus. I cannot imagine the pain and ache, but also deep love in Jesus’ heart as He washed each one’s feet. He knew what the future held for each one. He knew them from before time. Here was the great I am on His knees intimately serving His friends, calling this messy, treacherous group friends… oh He is worthy…

But He also by His very example shows us we do not get to choose who we think is worth serving and fighting for, and who is not. Jesus lowered Himself to show us our worth. He died on the cross because we have eternal worth. He restored the imago dei in us, and reminds us that all are made in the image of God, and all are worthy of our service and love if we claim Him as Savior worthy of our praise. You cannot love God and hate man. (1 John 4:20)

  1. I never really thought about Jesus washing Judas’ feet until now…

    When Jesus washed Judas’ feet,
did the Lord perchance look up?
Did eyes for a second meet,
    reflections in a fatal cup?
And could Judas meet His gaze,
    or did he look away,
    thinking back on better days,
and on the role he’d play
    later on this very night,
betrayal of the man he followed.
Did he think back on the light,
about to be by darkness swallowed?
    Or did Judas simply smile,
    a man become a crocodile?
